Southern California utility company addresses their indoor air quality with Cambridge Air Solutions
As the nation’s largest natural gas distribution utility, SoCalGas is committed to delivering clean, safe and reliable energy to 21.8 million consumers through 5.9 million meters in more than 500 communities. Their service territory encompasses approximately 24,000 square miles in diverse terrain throughout Central and Southern California, from Visalia to the Mexican border.
For more than 150 years, SoCalGas has served Central and Southern California as a responsible and engaged environmental leader, employer and neighbor. They strive to improve the quality of life in their communities by maintaining a diverse workforce, working with suppliers that represent and reflect the communities they serve, and giving back through charitable contributions and employee volunteer activities.
It is obvious that SoCalGas is committed to their community, but they are also committed to their associates. SoCalGas wanted to build a better working environment for their hard-working people.
When SoCalGas designed their new facility in Bakersfield, CA, they searched for a small CFM make-up air solution that would provide energy-efficient cool air in the summer and warm air in the winter. To achieve this, they chose the Cambridge Air Solutions’s ESC-Series indirect evaporative technology combined with an indirect fired heating section. The indirect evaporative technology provided a make-up air solution that delivers a temperature depression of 21°F during the hot summer days of Southern California. When the outside temperature reaches 102°F, that’s a “leaving-air” temperature of 81°F from their make-up air unit. This is more than enough cool air to meet the needs of the people inside the facility. This ESC-Series unit also has a variable frequency drive that allows them to match the exhaust load with a variable drive as well.
The Cambridge Air Solutions ESC-Series evaporative cooling unit is a semi-custom fabricated air handler that can utilize indirect, direct or a combination of both indirect/direct evaporative cooling to meet specific usage and dimensional requirements. The ESC-Series uses 100% outside air to provide tempered make-up air and building cooling.
With 12 models ranging from 2,400 to 56,000 CFM, it is designed for industrial, commercial, and institutional buildings needing to provide better indoor air quality without the equipment or operating costs associated with mechanical cooling.
Although indirect evaporative cooling cannot achieve the Delta T that mechanical cooling can, IEC still has the ability to provide a solution for tempered cooling in facilities where there is a lot of exhaust air and are working to achieve a “do not exceed” temperature.
Industrial applications for the ESC-Series (indirect evaporative cooling) include:
- Sports Arenas
- Call Centers
- Food Processing Plants
- Health Care/Labs
- Waste Water Treatment
- Data Centers
